How to Cook Rava Kichadi

A soft, comforting, and delicious South Indian breakfast made with rava, vegetables, and aromatic spices. Follow these simple steps to make perfectly fluffy Rava Kichadi at home.

🥕 Preparation

Before you start cooking, make sure all the ingredients are finely chopped and ready to use. This will make the cooking process smooth and easy.

👩‍🍳 Let’s Start Cooking!

Step 1: Heat the Pan

Place a deep frying pan on the stove and add the required amount of oil. Allow the oil to heat.

Step 2: Add the Spices

Add:

  • Cinnamon stick
  • Cloves

Sauté them lightly until they become aromatic.

Step 3: Add the Aromatics

Add the following ingredients one by one, mixing gently after each addition:

  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Green Chilli
  • Pudina (mint leaves)
  • Tomato

Cook everything together until the ingredients soften and release their flavors.

Step 4: Add the Vegetables

Now add the finely chopped vegetables:

  • Carrot
  • Beans
  • Green peas

Mix everything well and sauté for a few minutes.

Step 5: Add Water

Add 3 cups of water and mix well with all the ingredients.

💡 Important Tip:
For 1 cup of rava, use 3 cups of water. This is the ideal ratio for achieving a soft and fluffy Kichadi. Using less water may result in a dry or hard texture.

Step 6: Cook the Vegetables

Allow the water to boil for a few minutes. Check whether the vegetables are cooked and tender before adding the rava.

Step 7: Add the Rava

Once the vegetables are cooked, slowly add the rava while stirring continuously.

Keep mixing as you add the rava to prevent lumps from forming. The mixture will gradually become thick.

Step 8: Cook Until Fluffy

Continue cooking and stirring until the rava absorbs the water completely.

When the Kichadi becomes soft, fluffy, and well-cooked, it is ready.

Step 9: Garnish and Serve

Finally, sprinkle some finely chopped coriander leaves on top.
